In other words designing web pages that please the search engines and implement the factors that are needed to get as near to the top of their pages for a given search term, as you possible can.
The way to ascertain what the likes of Google rate as being key factors in rating what site should be top of their table, is done by analysing the top sites {your competitors} and implementing the needed changes to your pages, and then some. This does not mean copying their pages, this would be pointless, as the engines do not like duplicate content, and more importantly would be un professional.
Now I bet you are thinking to yourself, mmmmm that does not sound that hard, well to a degree its not as complicated has a lot of big SEO companies would like you to think, but there is hell of a lot more work involved than just mimicking the other sites.
Search Engines
I am sure you know what a search engine is!
However, just in case you have been hibernating for the last few years, let me remind you. A search engine is basically a program that does what it says, it searches, alright that’s not very clear. Let’s take Google for our example, think of it as a database, that’s a large collection of information. What happens is Google sends out its spiders that run around the internet as fast as all their legs can carry them, gathering all the information from the sites as they pass through them, sending this back to Google’s database.
Now you know why they call it the WEB!

Because of all the little spiders living on it.
Sorry I know you don’t believe that.
Put plainly a spider on the internet is a highly efficient piece of software, collecting web site data. With out the search engines you would have to know the full address of the site you wish to go to. Because our friends at Google have collected all the information for us and allocated them with what they at the time say is a relevant search word or words. All we have to do is enter the type of information that we require and the Google engine searches and returns the relevant sites, put in order of how Google thinks is the most informative page.
So to make it into the top slots, you have to find out what Google or other search engines require, and then implement it.
There is lots of information on SEO on the internet if you wish to learn more. On the other hand, you could just pay someone to optimize your site for you instead, over all it would be the most effective way to go, as it takes a long time and a lot of work to get it right.
Obviously I am not going to tell you how to do my job am I? I have to eat you know. But I will give you this advice, there are a lot of people out there on the hyper galaxy who will offer you the world for the right money, while most SEO companies are straight, there is a lot that aren’t.
- We will submit your site to over 100 search engines: {There is only about 4 major players to bother with, that’s Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL, and ASK. A lot of search engines get their information from the big players like Google or Yahoo, there is also the fact that a lot of small search engines only contain specific sites, could be by country or by subject.
- We guarantee to get you to the top page of Google: {They can and will do this, but it will be for a remote keyword, that is not searched for that often if at all. For instance, you sell DVDs’ and your shop is in Cheshire, they get you to no 1, with buy DVDs in Cheshire, sounds great I am in Cheshire and I sell DVDs I will make bucket loads. Sorry but you won’t, when I checked there had been no searches for buy DVDs in Cheshire, that’s why they have got you to number one, your site is optimized for a rare search phrase and not many sites are using it. However, there was 3,625 looking for, DVD movies. It is no good being top for something no one looks for.
- We will get you thousands of links into your site: {This would be brilliant and give you a good pr with Google. However, they will exchange links with any site that agrees to it and not ones that are relevant to your site. You sell DVDS and have a load of links from a adult dating site, that tells Google that your site must not be all that relevant to DVDS but maybe Adult Dating, see what I mean, links are good but must be relevant}
